Reading Promotion

Goals for Mexico - School Libraries

Source: Fundación Televisa

In Fundación Televisa we know that reading is one of the most important means to broaden and enrich knowledge, and to raise awareness in children and young adults on a permanent on going process. Reading the appropriate texts help strengthen the education received at school, stimulates their imagination and curiosity, and offers information on the diverse ways of thinking in the world, not only in the preset time, but through out the history of man kind; it also contributes, in consequence, to the adequate development of  their intelligence and mental capacities.

Objectives:
In Fundación Televisa we strive for Mexico’s childhood and youth to have integral and quality education. To accomplish this we have developed various programs that complement and enrich their formation. We consider that reading is one of the most effective ways to accede to knowledge in an entertaining fashion, allowing them to complement and reinforce the education received at school. With this in mind, we facilitate and promote not only reading, but the use of encyclopedias, dictionaries, manuals, etcetera, through the equipment of libraries in basic and junior high public schools.

How we help:
In a joint effort between Fundación Televisa, Televisa Deportes, GNP, the Federal Government, schools and participating parents the program allocates a basic or junior high public school library 300 titles every time the Football Club Necaxa scores a goal.

  1. Fundación Televisa, Televisa Deportes and GNP contribute with the resources for the acquisition of the books.
  2. - The Federal Government, through the Comisión Nacional de Textos Gratuitos (National Commission for Free Text Books) and the Dirección General de Materiales y Metodos Educativos de la SEP (Ministry of Education General Direction for Educational Materials and Methods), selects the titles and distributes them.
  3. - Schools and parents fit out the libraries
  4. In this program the Football Clubs Atlas and Dorados de Culiacan and The National Football Team have participated

Results:

The goals scored by Football Clubs Necaxa, San Luis, Dorados de Culiacan and Queretaro have been translated into 74 school libraries (each one with 300 books) for public elementary schools. Our main ally in this program is Grupo Nacional Provincial (GNP).

Since 2002, Fundación Televisa has given 179,700 books to 599 public schools, benefiting 254,525 children.
